Fire at Blessing Hope Mission – Girl’s Dormitory Partially Destroyed

 

The fire started at 5:00am on 14th of June 2023. By that time, the children were in classes having morning remedial lessons, they saw the fire break out and they started screaming. So, all of the 287 students left their classrooms and ran out. They wanted to enter the dorm building so that they can retrieve their belongings, but the room was already full of smoke and fire. We called fire brigades, but none showed up. Some said that the fire brigade had broken down, so we called on the neighbors who volunteered to bring water down. They cooperated with the students who went around to bring water, and by the help of God, they were able to put out the fire even though, the fire was spreading very fast, and it could have brought down the entire school compound. 

The fire negatively impacted our school and the ministry where the children, teachers, and even workers were affected and traumatized by the fire and destruction. To make things worse, I too, was personally affected, because it happened when we have no money to buy even mattresses or personal hygiene items for children to use right now.

We have engaged a counseling team from various organizations to help the students, teachers, and staff cope with the loss. 

Currently, the children are using one of the classrooms as a place to sleep. In the morning, they take their bedding outside and then use it as a classroom. We have used some of the food money to purchase some bedding, but it is not enough. Although we have resumed with the studies, the students are not comfortable since some don’t have personal hygiene items, but we are trusting in God for His provision.

There is little information on what caused the fire in the girls’ dormitory, and we are awaiting the final report from the investigation from the police.

The total cost of the fire damage is approximately $25,000. This includes the Dormitory beds, mattresses, blankets, uniforms, shoes, and other personal effects. We are trusting in God to raise $35,000 since this will also help us to put up water towers and more water storage tanks. 



Prayer Request:

Pray for all the students and staff affected by the fire. Pray for God’s provisions and that we can reach our goal of raising $35,000 to help restore the damages from the fire and provide our students with all the basic necessities like beds, blankets, uniforms, and other personal items. This will also help us to put up water towers and more water storage tanks.
