In recent weeks Haiti has been devastated by the assassination of its President, by an earthquake, and by a tropical storm. Through the grace of God, our home and kids didn’t experience any severe damage. They were scared though, especially of the instability after the assassination and the shaking of the earthquake. We are hoping that things will calm down and we will be able to have a normal school year for all of our kids.

Enfants d’ I’Espoir pou Haiti (Children of Hope for Haiti) is located in the city of Jacmel and has a two-pronged program for meeting the needs of children in the community. The first part of the program is an orphanage where thirteen kids live. These kids came to the home through the children’s services program of the Haitian government from a variety of backgrounds. Some, like 10-year old twins Elisna and Elismene, came to the home with severe malnutrition and no family members willing to care for them when they were abandoned by their mother. They arrived as very sick toddlers, but have overcome so much. They are now very happy, healthy little girls who are thriving in school. The kids who live in the home are provided for with safety, security, food, education, love and extracurricular programs like karate and dance class.

The second part of the program is a foster care style program. We currently have four girls who lived at the home when they were little that have transitioned into living with families in the local community. These girls are pioneering this vision that we have to move kids, when it can be done in a safe and healthy way, out of an institution style living and into a family. While this isn’t possible for all of the kids, for these four it was and it has been amazing for them. They continue to flourish in their new families while we continue to do visits and help pay for their education and cost of living.

We are currently working to build up our support base for the programs so that the kids can remain in safe, loving homes.
